US envoy goes on six-day bike trip

PUTRAJAYA: Joseph Y. Yun could have chosen an easier way to meet Malaysians and raise awareness about the environment. After all, he is the United States ambassador to Malaysia.

However, Yun decided to take the unusual step of approaching people by cycling 411km from Putrajaya to Singapore.

Dressed in bright blue, green and grey t-shirt and black cycling shorts, the enthusiastic Yun began his journey at 8.30am from the Pullman Hotel here yesterday. He is leading 15 embassy staff and their family members on a six-day cyclethon to mark World Environment Day, which falls on Friday – the day they end their trip in Singapore.

“The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has taken a number of steps in recent years to reduce energy consumption,” he said before setting off to cheers from family and friends.

“Our embassy’s ‘Green Team’ with our motto ‘Go Green, Lah’ is always looking for innovative ways to be greener and more environmentally-friendly.

“In line with our own initiatives, we want to set an example as to how people can meet goals such as reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.”

The bicycle, said Yun, was chosen to promote such environmental awareness.

“It also serves as a unique experience for the embassy staff,” he added.

Yun and his team would be making six stop-overs along their journey. They would be accompanied by four traffic policemen. – Bernama
