KUALA LUMPUR: The local authorities spent about RM1 billion a year to manage solid waste generated in the country, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said today. On average, they used about 30 to 80 per cent of their revenue on solid waste management, he added.
“Globally, the local authorities
spend about 20 to 50 per cent of their revenue on solid waste,” he said at the Waste Management Conference and Exhibition 2010 organised by the Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia (Ensearch) here.
Kong’s speech at the two-day conference which ended today was delivered by Solid Waste Management Department Director-General Datuk Dr Nadzri Yahaya.
Kong said that in 2002, Malaysians generated 17,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, 19,000 tonnes in 2005 and this was estimated to increase to 30,000 tonnes by 2020, showing an unsustainable pattern.
