TECHNICAL TOURS – ISWA 2014

Technical Tour 01 – Waste Treatment Plant

Unidade de Tratamento de Resíduos S.A. – UTR

The UTR is a plant built to treat potentially infectious biological waste, and operates through clean technology (Electro – Thermal Deactivation – ETD), which inactivates microorganisms in waste through exposure to an intense high power electric field, generated by radio frequency waves. The unit is located in Sao Paulo, at Jaguaré neighborhood, and has two production lines with a capacity of 50 tons/day in each one, totaling 100 tons/day and currently receives an average of 90 tons/day, supplying all demand from the municipality of São Paulo. Its operation is performed in four steps: Receive and Storage of Waste; Mischaracterization, Volume Reduction and Homogenization; Treatment; Packaging and Transportation to Final Destination.

Time schedule: from 8:30AM to 1:00PM

Individual Protection Equipment (IPE) will be provided.

Dress code: Long pants and closed low-heeled shoes.

Estimated time inside the plant: 2 and a half hours.

Technical Tour 02 – Waste Pickers Cooperative

COOPER-RECIFAVELA, Cooperativa de Catadores de Materiais Recicláveis da Favela Vila Prudente de São Paulo – Cooperative of Recyclables Waste Pickers from Vila Prudente Community

The COOPER-RECIFAVELA, arose from the union of residents from Vila Prudente and Paraguay  Communities in 1996, who chose to work collecting and selling recyclables. The cooperative began with fifty families, under the bridges Grande São Paulo and Francisco Mesquita.

In 2007, the cooperative received training courses which enabled the growth and evolution of the cooperative.

Currently, Cooper Recifavela receives about 5 tons/day of dry waste and has about 30 members, of which 90% are women, who supports their families with the income obtained from their work.

Time schedule: from 8:30AM to 12:00PM

Dress code: Long pants and closed low-heeled shoes.

Technical Tour 03 – Waste Treatment Plant

Plataforma de Tratamento de Resíduos de Mauá/SP – Silcon Ambiental

The Mauá Waste Treatment Plant started its operations in 2002 and is designed to treat solid waste from health care and industrial streams, by using two technologies: incineration and sterilization. Its currently processing capacity is 9 tons of waste per day with incinerators. There there’s also a rotary incinerator installed, awaiting the issuance of the license for operation, which will increase the capacity for 1.000 Kilo of chemical waste per hour. This system relies on sophisticated treatment of gaseous effluents and continuous monitoring of CO2, CO, O2, and hydrocarbon.

The sterilization process has two horizontal autoclaves with parity of 65 tons per day of organic and healthcare waste.

Time schedule: from 02:00PM to 6:30PM

Individual Protection Equipment (IPE) will be provided.

Dress code: Long pants and closed low-heeled shoes.

Estimated time inside the unit: 1 and half hour

Technical Tour 04 – Landfill and Treatment Plant

Centro de Tratamento e Valorização Ambiental de Caieiras – Essencis SP Soluções Ambientais

The Caieiras Treatment and Valorization Plant, located northwest of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, is the largest waste treatment and recovery plant in Latin America, with an area of 3.5 million m2, 43% covered by native vegetation grown on the unit itself).

The technologies offered in Caieiras Plant are: Landfill for co-disposal of  municipal solid waste; Unit for pre-treatment of hazardous waste; Laboratory for receiving control and monitoring unit; Unit for Metal recivery; Thermal Desorption Unit (TDU) for contaminated soils; Reverse manufacture of refrigerators and e-waste.

The biogas produced by the landfill is captured, burnt (oxidation gas) and redirected into energy usage.

Time schedule: from 02:00PM to 07:00PM

Individual Protection Equipment (IPE) will be provided.

Dress code: Long pants and closed low-heeled shoes.

Installed in the Santo Amaro neighborhood, south of São Paulo City, the plant was inaugurated in July 2014 and has the capacity to process 250 tons of recyclables per day through an automated process pioneer in Latin America.

The equipment occupies an area of 4,800 m2 and the machinery was imported from France. This plant processes 13 different types of waste and the entire path of material occurs by 780m of automated conveyors.
