ISWA Beacon Conference 2016

ISWA Beacon Conference on Circular Economy & Resource Management

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The theme for WMAM’s 2nd ISWA Beacon Conference in Kuala Lumpur: “Circular Economy & Resource Management” could not have come at a better time. The recently released ISWA study titled “Global Waste Management Outlook” presented several daunting facts, but also provided viable solutions for leaders and decision makers.

Consider this:

• 2 – 3 billion people live without access to basic waste services.

• Cost of inaction to society exceeds the financial cost of a proper waste management by a factor of 5 to10.

• Waste prevention is key as 41 megacities (city population > 10 million) are expected to emerge by Year 2030, 32 of them in developing countries.

• Potential impact of improved waste management in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the economy is at 15% – 20%.

• Prevention of 1.3 billion tonnes of food waste generated per annum could save 9% of the total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

• 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) cut the investment needed in sound treatment and disposal facilities.

The question of “bringing waste under control” following an ever increasing population, rapid urbanisation and consumption, calls for a paradigm shift from a linear to a circular economy. A linear economy is traditionally meant as a “cradle to grave” concept, resources are extracted from the planet at an ever-increasing pace, turned into products that are disposed (as waste) after use.

In contrast, a circular economy is one that is waste-free via closing of resource loops, resilient by design, restores ecosystems and is innovative and impactful to society.

In short, the circular economy perspective sees that waste is considered a resource, rather than just waste. This waste is recycled, reused and continues to be cycled infinitely, so long that it has no negative effect on human life or the ecosystem.

The 2-day ISWA Beacon Conference on March 30-31, 2016 will bring together several notable speakers on circular economy from the context of waste as resource management from across all continents.

The information and experiences to be shared will be of tremendous benefit to participants from the public and private sectors as well as academicians and tertiary students.
